If it wasn’t for the 58 references to the Avengers, one could mistake Black Widow for being a film that’s not in the mammoth Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not that there isn’t a heavy dose of action sequences with explosive set pieces, but Scarlett Johansson’s ‘Natasha Romanoff’ exists more in a Bond-like world.

Black Widow introduces a Bond-like villain with a Bond-like name who manages his own mind-controlled MI6. …

Doing a Joker review back-to-back with Disney’s Cruella does provide some fun compare and contrast. Both films are villain origin stories that feature charismatic antagonists reimagined as protagonists and in this case, reinvigorated.

Let’s get the important information here at the top as to not bury the lede. Cruella de Vil shows little to no malevolence towards canines in this film. It was a bridge that the writing team and director Craig Gillespie understood they couldn’t cross without serious detriment to their protagonist.

The Cruella de Vil of 101 Dalmations fame uses Dalmation fur to construct her black and white…

One of my favorite films of all time is Darren Aronofsky’s, Requiem for a Dream. Requiem was a unique experience for me. The characters plodded along deliberately toward their downfall despite their insistence of flickering optimism. The optimism isn’t misplaced, but there’s not much reason to be hopeful.

Arthur Fleck of Joker (Joaquin Phoenix) takes a similar downward trajectory in his derangement but there is no sign of hope for the man who will eventually develop the persona of Batman’s signature villain. As Fleck’s world crumbles around him, he revels in it and embraces the chaos.

Todd Phillips directs Joker…

Both series have notable shortcomings but FIFA is a remarkably poor effort at representing the game of soccer

I don’t take any solace or joy in criticizing the latest efforts of EA Sports franchises, but I found FIFA ’21 to be particularly offensive. What’s more frustrating than the games themselves is that there aren’t many major media personalities to hold EA Sports accountable. My apologies to the YouTubers who have done well-detailed breakdowns of why Madden and FIFA design is so bad, but it’s never going to push the needle until consumers stop buying these games en masse.

Just like those YouTubers though, I enter my voice into the void of sports gaming criticism that doesn’t have the…

In my last film review on “I Am Legend”, I lamented the film’s struggles with its thematic focus. Watching Greyhound in comparison is quite jarring because of how tightly focused it is on the expedition of Tom Hanks, unflappable World War II Navy captain.

Hanks stars as Captain Krause though you probably won’t know his name because the deckhands just call him Captain. Hanks adapted the screenplay himself from a book called “The Good Sheperd”.

The director of Greyhound is Aaron Schneider who only had one photography credit in the last 11 years. His two previous directorial efforts were an…

I found I Am Legend to be a disaffecting film, which I found to be consistent with my opinions of director Francis Lawrence’s work. I think part of it is to do with the type of movies he directs but I generally think his films lack a sharp focus on a central theme or developing a compelling character arc.

I Am Legend is Lawrence’s second major motion picture following a strange action-horror called Constantine which I have not seen. …

“When I was 15 years old I first played in the Western country. And I feel kind of everyone was against us for one reason. We was born in a certain place.”

The 30 for 30 documentary directed by Jonathan Hock begins with these powerful words spoken by Soviet defenseman Viacheslav ‘Slava’ Fetisov.

The best sports stories are human stories. Stories that we connect with on an emotional level. The highest mark of a good film or documentary is that the experience will leave you asking questions of yourself and of the world around you.

It’s especially ironic after hearing…

I know. I know. Having Resident Evil Village and fetishization in the title without the article being a 2,000-word thinkpiece on vampire Lady Dimitrescu must be false advertising, right?

Alas, there’s a reoccurring theme that has carried over from Resident Evil 7 that puzzles me. So let’s talk about it.

I’m not anti-body horror, but it has become a horror game device that has been as over-relied on as the classic jumpscare.

When used effectively and sparingly, a scene of mutilation in a first-person horror game can be jarring and anxiety-inducing. Resident Evil 7 captured this sentiment well in its…

There’s a throwaway line by Benedict Wong’s character, Baron, that tells you everything you need to know about this movie. Baron is a pilot, who after flying a nice plane says something along the lines of, “like most of my encounters, it was short but sweet.”

Last night was back to business for the Tampa Bay Rowdies as they dispatched the visiting Charlotte Independence team who also came off a solid 2020 campaign.

The Rowdies 3–0 victory was punctuated by two Sebastian Guenzatti goals, and then a Guenzatti assist to Leo Fernandes to add the exclamation mark.

First Half Analysis

The Rowdies were interlocked in a back and forth affair as neither team showed much consistent possession in the first 45. Antley made an onside run (somehow) on the right-wing and slotted a ball to Steinberger in the box who held up for a charging Wyke who put a…
